Ground2K4 Source Files for Innsbruck_G2K4.zip

Author: Holger Sandmann, hsandman@sfu.ca
Date of Release:	February 2004

You are welcome to change and/or add on to these files as you wish. If you're planning on uploading your version (freeware only, please!) you DON'T need to ask me for permission or list me as a co-author; a brief acknowledgment of my original project files (Innsbruck_G2K4.zip and G2K4-bmp_innsbruck.zip) is all that I'd like to see.

Note: Please do not flood me with emails!!! Instead, post all inquiries about Ground2K4 in the AVSIM Scenery Design Forum (or other design fora) after (!) using the Search function to find out whether others have asked the same question before. Thank you for your consideration!

Additional required download: G2K4-bmp_innsbruck.zip (satellite image base maps), available at AVSIM.com

----------------------------------------------------------------
Set-up in Ground2K4:

I assume that you have installed the latest version of Ground2K4, by Christian Fumey, and have read its documentation as well as Luis' "Ground2K for Beginners" (ground2k_for_beginners_121649.zip, at Avsim). There are several different ways for setting up projects in G2K4; below, I describe the method I prefer.

1) Extract G2K4-bmp_innsbruck.zip to a temporary directory and decompress the .ecw images as directed.

2) Make a project subdirectory in your Ground2K4 folder, e.g., "Innsbruck".

3) Move the two *.lwm files and the three decompressed *.bmp files (G2K4-bmp_innsbruck.zip) into the new subdirectory.

4) Open both *.lwm files in Wordpad and edit the following lines to reflect your (!) directory structure:

	0000 V5.3 (5.32) 2/29/04 6:10:15 PM F:\Ground2K4\Innsbruck\innsbruck15.LWM	<-- location of project .lwm file

	0018 "F:\GROUND2K4" <-- location of .raw files for landclass/waterclass

	0019 "F:\GROUND2K4" <-- location of .bgl files for landclass/waterclass

	0020 "F:\Ground2K4\Innsbruck\Innsbruck_10m_Spot8.bmp" <-- location of background bitmap

0030 "F:\Ground2K4\Innsbruck\innsbruck10.Bgl" <-- location and name of project files

0031 "F:\Ground2K4\Innsbruck\0_excl_innsbruck10.Bgl" <-- location and name of project exclude files

5) Save and close the edited files.

6) Move the .raw and LC*.bgl and WC*.bgl files into the directory you declared in lines "0018" and "0019" (preferably your Ground2K4 base directory).

7) Start Ground2K4 and check whether innsbruck15.LWM and innsbruck30.LWM load and compile OK.

8) You're ready to explore my files and edit or add to them.

----------------------------------------------------------------
What are the "*_edit.bgs" files?

These files are de-compiled and edited versions of the FS default vector data for roads (RD), railroads (RR), and streams (ST). In each file, I removed the section (LOD8 cell 408x121) for which I generated replacement data in Ground2K4. This way I get rid of the ugly flatten switches ("terraces in mountainsides") that remain visible even if the default vectors are excluded.

If you add to this project you can use the *_edit.bgs files to remove further LOD8 cells, if desired. The files can be edited in Wordpad but, obviously, you need to be familiar with the file structure. We're still waiting for the FS9 Terrain SDK, which will (hopefully) contain the updated "Terrain Vector Data.doc". In the meantime, the FS2002 version provides a good start and further information can be found in various posts in the AVSIM Scenery Design Forum.

Once you've completed the edits, compile the .bgs into .bgl files (drag-and-drop onto BGLC.exe) and check with LWMViewer before use in FS9 (see Software Used below).

----------------------------------------------------------------
Software Used:

1) Ground2K4 V5.32, by Christian Fumey, for adding rivers, streams, roads, railroads, bridges, as well as landclass and waterclass replacements. Available at AVSIM.COM and other FS file servers.

2) LWMViewer, by Jim Keir, for displaying FS default vector and polygon files and de-compiling into editable ASM source code. Available at http://www.jimkeir.co.uk/FlightSim/LWMViewer.html.

3) BGLC.exe, by FS Development Team, for re-assembling the edited default vector and polygon files. Part of the FS2002 MS BGL Compiler Software Developer's Kit (SDK) http://www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimulator/fs2002_downloads_sdk.asp.

4) DefArea V2.0, by Christian Fumey, for excluding incorrectly placed shorelines, roads, and rivers. Available at AVSIM.COM and other FS file servers.

In addition, I used MS Wordpad for text editing, Photoshop 5 for image editing, and Snapper for in-flight screenshots.
